The guideline to success

The on-line Professional Skills Modules have been designed and written by university academics to enable you to attain the same level of knowledge to that of a BSc QS Honours graduate. In this light, you need to take these PSM's very seriously as they do entail a complete commitment from yourself to take the time and effort to succeed with each module as they are offered.

Pre-planning your time

The average academic rating of these modules is 5 SAQA credit weighting which equates to 50 estimated hours per module to do well. So if one breaks this down, your pre-planning could look like this;

Tasks Time Commitment

· Material reading 10 hrs (10 pages per hr – read twice)

· Additional reading 15 hrs

· Interim Assessment preparation 10 hrs

· Exam preparation 12 hrs

· Exam writing 3 hrs

This does not look a lot, but consider that this is the commitment required per module and most Candidates want to complete the PSM as quickly as possible and intend doing 3 modules per semester, whilst still holding down a full-time job. The time commitment now becomes 150 hours over a 12-week period or roughly 50 hours per month. If you are a fast reader and learner, you may be able to cut the estimated time down a bit, but generally this is the recommended time you need to allocate to your future.

The SACQSP have provided a range of on-line tools to assist you in this regard.

The registration is done on-line and you need to select a maximum of three of the highlighted modules in the PSM schedule. You have to enrol on each module selected separately. The enrolment date will close 4-weeks after the start of the module being offered.

Receiving the module

The system will automatically send you a confirmatory email with a secure on-line access address to retrieve your PDF module material. This address is valid for 7-days from date of confirmation of payment. Once the email with the access code has been sent you cannot cancel or change the module selected and no refund can be made.

Study Forum and Blog

The PSM Co-ordinator will allocate to a module specific study forum and blog that will enable you communicate with others to assist in your studies. To access this page per module, go to GROUPS on the SACQSP website.

· Forum - This is a free open chat place to discuss and ask questions of each other who are doing the same module. Please do not abuse this study place with un-related chat.

· Blog - This is a restricted place for the module supervisor to answer queries and add supplementary information to assist you.

When anyone from the Forum or Blog add a comment, you will receive an email notification thereof.

Module Calendar

The deadline for PSM 1 workplace experience submission and examinations will be noted on the module calendar.  If your PSM 1 assignment is Acceptable and your interim assessment mark is 60% or more, you will be permitted to continue to register for the examination.

The Examination

The booking for the examination will only be permitted for Candidates who has met performance requirement. Bookings for the module exams will only open on the SACQSP website 10-days before the exam and close 3-days before the actual exam. Exams are written on the last 3 Saturdays of the 12-week module cycle. Only you can book for your exam as the system security will check your registration and if you have met the due performance to write the exam. Please select the most convenient venue to write the exam. Payment for the exams requires to be made before the exam date in order to receive an exam number. Candidates without an exam number will not be permitted to write the module exams. Please check the examination dairy/timetable to ensure you are available to write the examination for the modules you selected

Statement of Competence

Once your exam has been marked and moderated by the external examiners appointed, the SACQSP will publish your results. Successful Candidates will have their certificate of Module competency placed directly into their profile. Although results may take up to 6-weeks to be published, you may still continue and enrol for the next batch of PSMs.

Un-successful Candidates

If the exam preparation and understanding interim assessment for final written  or final written examination was not of an acceptable standard and the Candidate fails the examination, you will be required to repeat the entire module in 12-months' time. As the marking of the exams are done by 2 external examiners, there will be no re-marking or appeals considered. Examination without interim assessment will be granted under limited circumstances as detailed in the PSM Policy.
