CBE INFORMATION KNOWLEDGE CENTRE

On the 31st March 2008, the Chief Executive Officer of the Council for the Built Environment (CBE), Bheki Zulu, launched an information and knowledge centre of the built environment sector. This information centre is intended to develop into a one stop shop solution for anyone with interest or involvement in the built environment.

Stakeholders are encouraged to access this electronic information and knowledge centre which is available on the CBE’s website. Journals available on this website are password protected and full-text articles can be requested from the CBE’s information and knowledge officer. However, copying/downloading of material in CBE’s possession is governed by Section 12 of the Copyright Act No. 98 of 1978, of the Republic of South Africa which spells out the terms under which copies may be made.

Other services offered by the centre include:-

  • Information search for stakeholders – Professionals are encouraged to contact the centre to suggest sources or preferred information needed for their research or that they would like to see. Extensive searching will be done by the information centre for the stakeholder.
  • Current awareness service – Stakeholders who are interested in finding the latest addition to the information centre can forward their email addresses to the information and knowledge centre officer, Busi Khumalo at busi@cbe.org.za. The Current Awareness Bulletin will be forwarded to them on a monthly basis.

COUNCIL EXAMS - SEPTEMBER 2008

The Council open-book exam will take place on 18/19 September 2008 and the latest date for registration is Wednesday 10 September 2008.

A workshop to prepare candidates for Council Exams I and II will take place on Friday 29 August 2008.

OBJECTIVES
This international conference is intended to bring together postgraduate researchers, academics and industry representatives from Southern Africa and further afield to deliberate issues of common interest with the aim of advancing the quantity surveying profession. It will provide a platform to highlight the vision of the profession in a changing environment. CPD certificates will be issued to delegates.

SCOPE
The scope of the conference is to encourage active debate amongst researchers, post-graduate students and practitioners. Submissions by students, personnel who are working in the quantity surveying discipline and those who are concerned with the challenges that the South African quantity surveying profession faces, are particularly welcome. The conference seeks to explore current advances in research relevant to the present and future state of development of the profession, nationally and globally. Papers should focus on new research themes, practices and topics, innovative strategies or well articulated methodologies applied in the profession’s context. Reporting on work recently completed or work in progress is also welcomed. The aim is to address the role and the contribution of all who add value to the profession’s performance.

To guide, facilitate and promote a high standard of competency and responsibility in the quantity surveying profession and to increase public awareness of the range of services offered. To ensure the profession fulfils its total role in the development of South Africa.
